About Us

For many years The North End 49ers youth football program, represented the North End district of Providence. The Founder and President Mr. Chico Sykes passed away on November of 2013. For unknown reasons Mrs. Sykes decided not to continue her late husband’s legacy, she instead sold the name, all the equipment and closed the bank account.

We were not able to give our kids a banquet or any trophies. The parents were dismayed.  Some coaches and kids left to other football organizations because they believed there were no longer going to be a youth football program in the north end area. However a small group of us decided not to give up!  We decided to continue Mr. Sykes legacy and became The North End Sea Hawks.

We had a great amount of support from other teams that donated some equipment and we vigorously fundraised to buy our jerseys and cheer outfits. We considered our first year to be a success because we had over 150 boys and girls sign up.

Mr. Chico who also was a prison guard for many years, strongly believed that if we teach these kids; teamwork, self-discipline, physical fitness, accountability, responsibility, self-respect, as well as respect for others, sportsmanship, community pride and most importantly, the importance of educational excellence that some of these inner city kids can grow up and become whatever they strive for.
